In Memory of Christine Shimizu

The Christini Fund was established in the memory of Christine Shimizu who lost her battle to the most lethal form of mitochondrial disease, Leigh Syndrome, just weeks after her second birthday. The goals of the Christini Fund are to raise money for research, increase public awareness of mitochondrial diseases, and inform people about the hope that can be found at the Mitochondrial and Metabolic Disease Center at UCSD.

We Made a Difference...
Amy Cavlovic, who lost her niece, Hailey Reese Cavlovic, earlier this year to Alpers disease writes: “While reading about Christini, I also learned how your efforts directly led to the researchers being able to discover the genetic cause of Alper’s. How could we ever thank you for this? Hailey’s mom and dad are expecting again and, thanks to your work, are having genetic testing done. I feel like Christini has been Hailey’s angel. In honor and memory of Hailey, Christini and all the other little ones who fight these cruel diseases, we hope to do as you have done – bring awareness, raise money and fight. Thank you again. Words can never begin to describe how brave and amazing you are for directing your energies as you have. God bless you.”
