The 9th annual UCSD Christini Fund Golf Tournament was dedicated to the memories of Cullan McPherson of Scotland and Ori Levi of Israel. From halfway around the world, the families of these two boys reached out to the Christini Fund for information and guidance to help their children. Sadly, the passing of Cullan and Ori reminds us that mitochondrial disease is affecting children worldwide. Before Cullan and Ori lost their battle, the Christini Fund was able to refer the boys' families to mitochondrial disease experts in their respective countries -- as significant event for mitochondrial medicine considering that nine years ago only a handful of centers existed. Today, mitochondrial disease centers can be found around the world. As the families of Cullan and Ori reached out to the Christini Fund, we now reach out to them with compassion, and we work with even greater urgency to fight a disease that knows no continental boundaries. |
